Haven: Reimagining a Salmon Estuary
Kus-kus-sum Saw Mill, Courtenay, BC
Third Year threshold Studio with fionn byrne
Completed April 2022
Following the impacts of climate change on the keystone species inhabiting the greater Komoks Region, this project examines the opportunity to bridge the threshold between nature and man through the transformation of the existing corrugated metal “Killing Wall” into a new, protected ground for salmon breeding. Provided the site’s status as an estuary, the design carefully considers the “return of nature” in line with the rich hunting and gathering history of the Komoks nation. Given this, the form of the Komoks fishing Weir once used to catch salmon is abstracted along with the use of live staking to create a natural haven for the fish that benefits the surrounding ecosystems.
